COIVD-19 and COVID-19 symptoms diagnosed by Artificial Intelligence

Use your voice to diagnose illnesses Artificial intelligence could revolutionize diagnostics in the coming years. Already today algorithms are in use that recognize illnesses by the voice of the patient. When the COVID-19 pandemic began not only doctors and researchers started to work to ensure that the situation relaxed as quickly as possible. Computer scientists and programmers also played their part. CONG approaches a possibility to diagnose COVID-19 and COVID-19 symptoms. In doing so, CONG uses artificial intelligence (AI) to search voice recordings of those affected for signs, which could indicate such a disease. To do this, CONG compares the voice recordings of sick people with the voices of people who tested negative in order to narrow down a characteristic voice profile.

AI future today

Artificial Intelligence is used and designed to detect diseases at an early stage – and thus alleviate the suffering of those affected, but also reduce the costs of subsequent treatment. AI plays a decisive role in this form of diagnosis. AI not only helps doctors make faster and more reliable diagnoses and thus help patients to recover more quickly. It also saves costs, says Verena Fink, AI expert and managing partner at Woodpecker Finch. „In this way, the AI manages to bring together two goals that were previously difficult to reconcile, to increase the quality of care and at the same time reduce costs. This is where its great potential lies“.

Areas of application

In addition to voice analysis there are other AI-controlled technologies that have already become established in medicine. Radiologists often use AI in imaging processes to evaluate the X-ray data more quickly and more precisely. The algorithms can also be useful in medical facial screening. The latest studies on the brain disease Parkinson’s show that AI could play an important role here too in the future. Long before the first motor failures are noticeable for the patient, the voice of a sick person begins to tremble almost inaudibly. It is possible to detect this tremor in almost 90 percent of all cases by the AI paying attention to minimal pitch fluctuations. These fluctuations occur when the sick person’s muscles weaken. AI-based integrations suich as CONG are intended to help identify the disease and slow down or even stop the death of nerve cells.

Another potential area of application: migraines. It often happens that migraine patients report changes in language. For example, those affected often have difficulty finding words during an attack. The AI should now use voice recordings to recognize speech patterns associated with impending migraine attacks. „As soon as the technology is trained to recognize a person’s personalized symptoms, it can warn the person for upcoming attack. Then the person affected could immediately take their medicine and prevent the severe migraine headache from even starting.

Areas of application for those algorithm are innumerable, only a few of them have been listed here. In general, a voice-based and trained application such as CONG can also be used to diagnose a lot of diseases. Some of them are laryngeal pathologies, early symptom of cancer of the larynx imitation, the paralysis and ADHD. Especially the application on a mobile platform makes CONG such an ingenious diagnostic tool.
